The Gothenburg Initiative
The Gothenburg initiative has been implementing vocational skills training programmes in Somalia since 2001. Since 2004 the trainings in Galkayo have been conducted in a separate, purpose built educational facility, fully equipped with the necessary tools and machines. Many of the teachers working at the school have themselves been trained by GI. The school offers 6 to 8 month long courses in a variety of subjects, and also provides employment promotion services. Conducted post training evaluations have shown that 47% of students find employment after finishing the training course. GI has also extended its presence into the rest of Somalia, and has built and equipped three vocational schools in South Central Somalia.
The overall objective of the organization is to improve the employment opportunities of disadvantaged Somali
Plans: This year GI plans to extend and institutionalize the vocational trainings as well as increase the employment opportunities for graduates by improving employment promotion services and encourage self employment. By working closing together with the Ministry of Education in Puntland GI hopes to encourage the Government of Puntland to create a government programme for vocational training and also institutionalize support to employment services and small enterprises.
