Introduction to Monitoring & Evaluation (2 days)

Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) is an essential element of effective project design and management. Donors, stakeholders, beneficiaries, managers and project implementation teams require regular feedback on how projects are performing. M&E systems and requirements can often be unduly complex, time consuming and confusing, especially for staff and managers who are new to the subject. This course is designed to help participants gain a basic understanding of what M&E entails, why it is necessary and what is required to do it well. It will aim to demystify some of the complex terminology and concepts used in M&E and equip participants with a basic operating knowledge of the key elements of an M&E system.

On completion of the course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Define the main terms and concepts used in Monitoring and Evaluation of projects and programmes.
  2. Understand the purpose and function of M&E in the project cycle.
  3. Be familiar with a range of basic M&E tools and their use.
  4. Design a simple project M&E plan using the M&E tools learned.
  5. Understand how to use M&E for planning, accountability, reporting and learning

This is an introductory course to Monitoring and Evaluation. It is suitable for NGO staff who are new to the subject of M&E and want to gain a basic understanding of the concepts and processes. The course will be conducted in English.
