Introduction

Risk Management and Accountability have become increasingly important components of good NGO management. The NGO operating environment in Somalia/Somaliland is extremely complex and presents some of the greatest management challenges in the global NGO community. In order to assist NGOs to build their capacity, this training course was designed as an introduction to the basic principles of risk management and accountability, with a view to promoting best practice.

 

Purpose of Training Course

The purpose of the one-day course is to provide an overview of the basic principles and methodologies for Risk Management & Accountability, with emphasis on practical application.

 

NOTE: Although some of the processes discussed in the training can be applied to security risk assessments, this is not a security management training.

 

Training Objectives

On completion of the course, the participants will be able to:

 

  • Understand Basic NGO Risk Management and Accountability
  • Be able to develop a simple Risk Register at both project and organisational level.
  • Be familiar with the Somalia NGO Consortium “Guidelines on Risk Mitigation for NGOs operating in Somalia/Somaliland” and the requirements to sign on to this document
  • Understand the role of the UN Risk Management Unit and the services it provides.

 

Intended Audience

This is an introductory course to NGO Risk Management. It is suitable for NGO managers and staff who have no previous training or experience in risk management and want to gain a basic understanding of the concepts and processes. Maximum of 20 -25 participants.

 

Training Methodology

The training will be facilitated in English using a practical and participatory methodology. Presentations, case studies and group exercises will be used to illustrate the various concepts. Where ever possible the training will be linked to the current work and experience of the participants.

About the Trainer

Rosemary Heenan is a Nurse/Midwife with an MSc in Community Health from Trinity College in Dublin. She has over 25 years’ experience of managing humanitarian and development programmes in thirteen countries throughout the continent of Africa. Rosemary managed programmes in the Gedo Region of Somalia for almost nine years before moving to South Africa with her family. She currently works as a consultant/trainer in organizational development, child protection and project management.
